I’m Carol, author and creator of the MGM Qpon Queen website.I am married to the love of my life and Greek boy, Steven, and have one red-headed step child, Nicholas (yes, he really is red-headed and I am aware of the irony of that statement). I am an extreme organizer and semi OCD person. I am a self-taught, not-extreme couponer.
I was born and raised in the South by (sorta) Yankee parents who were high school sweethearts. I am one of 9 (yes, I said NINE) kids. I refer to us like bath towels…His, Hers, and Ours. As you can imagine, with that many kids, my parents and more specifically my mom had to be VERY frugal…especially when my older brothers were going through puberty. We ALL know how much teenage boys eat. My mom would triple recipes and sometimes it still wasn’t enough. But I digress.
I learned to be creative with my cooking and crafting at an early age. I didn’t learn how to coupon though. My mom, like so many other people I have talked to in my life, always said that “Coupons only come out for name brand stuff and that’s so much more expensive.” or “No one really ever saves money using coupons.” My mom has changed her tune.
I started couponing in 2009 or 2010 out of desperation. My ex-husband and I had HUGE debts and I was the only one bringing in a steady paycheck. We didn’t have a car because we couldn’t afford the gas or insurance. We we almost always late with rent or utility bills. We lived paycheck to paycheck, begging and pleading for every little penny we could get. One week we needed some toilet paper for the apartment. I didn’t get paid until 3 days later and only had $2 in my checking account. I Googled cheap toilet paper and came across a website where a lady got a 12 pack of toilet paper for $0.25. I didn’t believe it was possible, but I was desperate. I printed the coupons listed on the site and went to Walgreen’s after work. Guess what? It wasn’t $0.25, it was $1.46. I was reasonably frustrated, but at least I got the needed toilet paper and didn’t break the bank.
A few years later I found a new and improved website that explained couponing so much better. The OCD lover in me was so excited! I spent HOURS clipping and organizing coupons.
I had a coupon binder and I organized my ads with post it notes.
I had fun and I saved money, but after a few months I’d get burned out because I was working full time and spending 20+ hours a week couponing and shopping.
Over the years I have modified my techniques and now have everything down to a point where I can spend maybe 4 – 5 hours a week couponing and shopping.
MGM Qpon Queen was bred from so many of my friends and family begging me to teach them to save money or do the shopping for them. My goal is to share my knowledge and help you save LOCALLY (but the national chains deals can be applied everywhere) and on the internet.
